This lunchtime, the puntCAT Foundation, the private entity that manages the .cat domain, presented the awards for the 5th edition of “Webs al punt.cat” (“.cat websites”), a competition open to compulsory secondary school (ESO) and Baccalaureate (Batxillerat) students and intermediate (CFGM) or higher (CFGS) level vocational training students from Catalan-speaking territories to design a website or app in Catalan within their academic area.

The .cat domain extension was the fastest-growing in Spain in 2014, with an increase of 17% in the number of active domain names. This increase contrasts with the stagnation of other domains, such as .es, which only grew by 3%; .com, which fell by 9%; .net, which was down 11%, and .org, with a decrease of 9%.

2014 has been proved to be a success for Fundació puntCAT, especially regarding the number of .cat registrations, its highest since the birth of the domain for the Catalan-speaking community. Last year, 23.534 new domains were enlisted, a number that exceeds the 19.856 that were registered in 2006, when the .cat domain was born. Undoubtedly, 2014 closure was excellent, also because last December was the second most successful month in puntCAT’s history thanks to its 3,000 new domains.
